How do I use Halcyon Trim Weight Pockets?
Given the wide acceptance of the aluminum scuba cylinder, and its’ inherent buoyancy characteristics, a general reticence exists within the dive industry to acknowledge the need for Ballast Mediated Airway Protection (BMAP). Halcyon’s focus on BMAP encourages the MC System diver to maintain proper ballast and trim configuration by focusing on building a balanced rig by selecting from fixed/non-ditchable weight mixed with releasable ballast. Halcyon’s Trim Weight Pockets provide you with another option that you can build upon to balance your MC System.
Advantages of Trim weights
By thoughtfully redistributing weight, divers will notice an improved horizontal trim in the water, leading to more efficient propulsion, lower gas consumption, increased bottom time and greater enjoyment of the dive.
The Halcyon Trim Weight Pocket can be an effective component of any Pioneer or Eclipse system. The addition of Trim Weight Pockets allows any diver the ability to move up to 10 lbs. (5 lbs. per pocket maximum) from their waist belt, or Halcyon ACB system, to the cylinder. Each pocket secures ballast, fully enclosed by 1000 Denier Cordura 1680 ballistic nylon, with simple pre- and post-dive access, facilitated by a 1/2” quick disconnect buckle.
Why not try a simple trim test during your next dive? While in mid-water, stop kicking for 30 seconds. If your feet drop below horizontal trim, you can benefit from Halcyon Trim Weight Pockets– regardless of the brand of BC you are currently using.
By carefully apportioning ballast into releasable and non-releasable categories, prudent distribution will ensure that a minimum of at least 1/3rd of the overall ballast can be released, allowing a controlled emergency swimming ascent. Non-releasable ballast can be shifted as required (normally above the waist and positioned on the cylinder cam strap) to aid in horizontal trim and eliminate the ineffective feet down posture common to traditional BC styles.
Given that a nearly empty aluminum cylinder will float an unconscious diver facedown at the surface, the Trim Weight is but one means available from Halcyon to augment ballast mediated airway protection (BMAP), and promote a heads-up position for the unconscious diver.
