Damaged Light Cord

Despite their best efforts, most active divers will someday experience a damaged light cord. Unnoticed cord snags, repetitive strains, and the pinch of a carelessly moved tank can eventually lead to a problem with the cord.
Signs of this sort of damage are immediately obvious:

  • Sporadic ignition difficulties;
  • Unexpected shut-offs within the expected burn time; and
  • A shut-off corresponding to a particular light head position.

The test for a damaged cord is rather simple. Using a fully charged battery, connect the light head and switch it on. Starting at the light head end of the cord, flex the cord about 90°. Watch for the light to go out as you test the range of possible cord positions in a circular fashion around the stainless steel sealing gland. Follow the same procedure for the lid end of the cord, and then move incrementally toward the midpoint of the cord. Do not burn the light for more than 5 minutes without submerging the light head in water. The test for a bad cord can be conducted with the light head submerged in a water bath– a five gallon bucket or a full kitchen sink works well for the purpose. If you discover your light has a damaged cord, Halcyon Tech Services can perform a cord replacement, wet pressure test the entire assembly to a depth of 330 ft., and quickly return it to active diving.
