Halcyon Proteus and Explorer Lights

HMI Video Light Explorer Pro 14 Explorer Pro 6 Explorer Pro 4 Explorer Pro 3 Explorer Lighting Systems
Halcyon offers a primary light for every dive. The Explorer line is the latest evolution of our exploration-grade primary lighting. The Explorer's DNA can be traced back eight years through the original Explorer Pro 14: certainly one of the most trusted dive lights ever made. From the rock-solid battery pack and the water-tight lid to the superior flicker-free performace of the HID light element, the Explorer again sets the standard against which other lights will be judged.

The Explorer 4.5 is not much larger than a D-cell flashlight, and the Apollo 200w HMI underwater studio light is now driven by a canister only slightly larger than our Proteus 6. The Explorer 13 has been fitted with our new 10w HID light head at the request of explorers pushing the limits of cave exploration in Mexico-- we would never have believed that divers would request a primary light with a 12 hour burn time! The stronger-than-steel Delrin canisters are a work of art; although we rate the lights to five hundred feet/152 meters, the canister itself has a theoretical depth rating of several thousand feet.

Proteus Lighting Systems
Proteus 3 and 6Several months into the testing of the original Helios NiMH lights, Jarrod looked over at an Explorer Pro 14 on the shelf and exclaimed that he couldn't believe that he'd spent so many years lugging such a large canister to the far reaches of the world. It is obvious that the rest of the diving world agrees: for extended range and exploration diving, the Explorer made the Explorer Pro series obsolete.

The stalwart Explorer Pro series has been retired from the Halcyon catalog. Although the Explorer Pro 14 will still be available by special order, the Explorer Pro 3 and 6 lights are no longer in the Halcyon line-up. For divers who want a traditional sealed lead acid battery design, Halcyon now offers both the Proteus 3 and Proteus 6 canister lights. Designed as our entry level 10w HID system (with either the fixed beam or focusable 10w light heads), the Proteus 3 provides a generous two hour burn time with a slim form factor. The Proteus 6 lights are available with multiple lamp configurations, but with the 18w HID it burns for two hours and is our most affordable high performance cave and wreck system. Proteus canisters are milled to exacting tolerances from a new high performance plastic that allows us to eliminate the bulkhead on the battery pack.

  • Traditional sealed lead acid batteries
  • One piece canister maintains maximum reliability

All Halcyon Lights come standard with the following:

  • Stainless sealing glands and fittings
  • Strain relief fittings on the cords
  • Larger diameter hands-free Goodman handle, facilitating ease of use with dry gloves
  • Stainless locking latches
  • Lifetime warranty on canister
  • Depth rated to 500'/152m

All Goodman handle-based lightheads are available with optional exploration handles. The exploration handle includes a thumb-holder for use while scootering and a handle-mounted mini-knife.

18 watt HID Lighthead
Halcyon's workhorse light, the 18watt HID, allows full adjustability and easy bulb changes in a conventional test tube style design. Light output is similar to a 75watt halogen light at a fraction of the power consumption.

Halcyon has been focused on designing, testing, and building the optimal reflector over the last year. Our goal has been to create the brightest, tightest spot while utilizing materials and finishes that will stand up to years of immersion in abusive marine environments.

Beginning immediately, all Halcyon 18W HID lights are shipping with our exclusive ultra-bright reflector. We've designed the parabola of the reflector specifically for use with our 18W lighthead. The surface is spun and polished to our specifications, and will not chip or flake like can happen with metal film vacuum-coated reflectors. Combined with the extended protective cowling on our lighthead, the Explorer 18W lights throw out an intensely focused beam of bright, white light that you can rely on in the most challenging of situations.

Existing Halcyon 18W lightheads can be upgraded to the new reflector through a factory-performed service.

10 watt HID Lightheads
Where innovation meets practicality. Halcyon's fully closed light head (patent pending) provides divers with a nearly indestructible light head that is able to be adjusted from a laser-like beam to a diffuse soft light with the mere twist of a dial.

If you want the power of a 10w light but in a very rugged and compact package, consider Halcyon's fixed-beam 10w option. The fixed-beam light is designed around an MR-11 HID bulb that burns bright and white with a six-degree spot.

DIR Tip 66
Light signals can be an important means of communication because they work in a variety of situations and are especially effective in gaining a team member's attention. In dark surroundings, individuals can easily communicate with their lights over large distances. Even in close quarters light signals may be preferable, especially if divers are not facing one another. Many open water divers are starting to realize how lights can simplify communication and enrich a dive. Divers frequently use light signals over hand signals because they are:

  • Easy to see
  • More efficient to use
  • Effective at much greater distances
